Three Year 4 pupils from Oswestry School Prep have completed a challenging triathlon to raise funds for a young girl living with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer.
William, George, and Pip, all aged nine, took on the triathlon in honour of William’s cousin, Freya, from Wrexham, who was diagnosed in January 2025 with a terminal brain tumour. Despite undergoing intensive treatment, including surgery, radiotherapy, and time in intensive care, Freya continues to fight with remarkable determination and spirit.
The triathlon, which took place on Sunday 29th June around the school grounds, saw the boys each take on a segment of the event: George completed a 2km swim, Pip cycled 21km, and William ran 5km. Their aim was to raise money for Freya’s ongoing treatment and care, which includes exploring clinical trials abroad, private physiotherapy, and creating special experiences to support her wellbeing.
The idea came about during a walk to Forest School, where the boys decided they wanted to do something meaningful to help Freya and her family. Their efforts have already helped raise awareness and funds through a JustGiving page, with donations going towards essential travel, medical support, and care costs.
Freya’s aunt and William’s mother, Hannah Flynn, said the support has brought strength to the family during an incredibly difficult time.
“In January 2025, Freya was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. It’s the kind of news no one should ever have to hear about a child they love,” she said. “Although the tumour has shrunk, it’s still there, and it’s inevitable it will reactivate. But Freya has shown extraordinary strength and courage through it all.”
Since her diagnosis, Freya has lost the ability to walk and can no longer attend school. Despite this, she continues to make progress in her recovery — learning to write with her left hand after losing control of her right side and pushing herself in physiotherapy sessions.
“We were told to say our goodbyes before radiotherapy, as she might not wake up. But she did, and she’s improved more than we could have imagined,” said Ms Flynn. “Her spirit is unbroken, and the boys’ efforts are a testament to that same determination and love.”
The boys were praised for their bravery and resilience during the challenge, which took place in unusually hot weather.
“The triathlon was completely their own idea, and they carried it out brilliantly,” Ms Flynn added. “I’m so proud of all three of them.”
