Senior School Curriculum

Pupils follow a broad and balanced academic pathway, progressing through a strong foundation in core subjects towards a wide range of GCSEs and A-levels. Small class sizes and dedicated teaching ensure every pupil is known, supported, and challenged to reach their full potential.

But education at Oswestry is never limited to textbooks. Our vibrant curriculum blends academic rigour with creative exploration, critical thinking, and real-world relevance. From debating and drama to science lectures and coding challenges, pupils are encouraged to question, imagine, and lead.

Character development is at the heart of our approach. Through PSHE, chapels, leadership opportunities, and a packed programme of co-curricular activities, we nurture resilience, integrity, and a lifelong love of learning. Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or during one of our enriching trips, pupils develop our schools’ Values and Virtues that will carry them confidently into the future.

At Oswestry, we don’t just prepare pupils for school — we prepare them for life.

Lower School

In the Lower School (Years 7 to 9), we lay the essential foundations for lifelong learning. Our carefully structured curriculum is broad, balanced, and designed to spark curiosity across every subject area - from English, maths and science to the humanities, languages, technology, and the creative arts. We combine traditional academic rigour with innovative teaching, helping pupils develop core knowledge, independent thinking, and a genuine love for learning.

Upper School

Fourth and Fifth Form (Years 10 & 11) pupils follow a curriculum centred on a 'core' of English, Mathematics, and Science. In Science GCSE, pupils have two options: they can opt for separate Sciences, requiring it as one of their 'option' subjects, or they can choose Co-ordinated Sciences (equivalent to two GCSEs). The remaining four optional subjects allow pupils to tailor their programme to match their abilities and future study intentions.

This framework ensures a balanced curriculum, though in some cases, pupils may be advised to take three rather than four additional subjects to allocate more time for core subject support. In Fourth and Fifth Form, pupils also participate in non-examined courses in Physical Education and PfL (Preparation for Life).

Sixth Form

Our Sixth Form offers a stimulating and supportive environment where students focus on three or four A-level subjects, chosen to reflect their passions, strengths, and future ambitions. With expert teaching, small class sizes, and personalised academic guidance, pupils are encouraged to think critically, work independently, and achieve their full potential.

The curriculum is enriched with opportunities beyond the classroom including academic development, leadership roles, guest lectures, and university preparation all aimed at ensuring pupils are ready to take their next step beyond school. Alongside their academic studies, all Sixth Formers take part in a tailored PfL programme and continue to enjoy a vibrant co-curricular life, developing the confidence, character, and skills they need to succeed in a fast changing world.
