On Thursday, the whole school came together to celebrate European Day of Languages, an annual event that reminds us of the importance – and joy – of learning about different cultures, traditions, and ways of communicating across the world.
The day was packed full of activities designed to inspire curiosity and celebrate diversity. Pupils enjoyed a series of fun and competitive quizzes that tested their knowledge of European countries, capitals, famous landmarks, and languages. From spotting idioms to recognising national flags, the atmosphere was buzzing with energy as pupils worked together in teams to score points and show off what they knew.
Food, of course, was at the heart of the celebration! The refectory served a special European-inspired menu at lunch, giving everyone a chance to taste authentic dishes from across the continent. Pupils and staff tucked into everything from French pastries to Italian pasta and Spanish-style tapas, enjoying the chance to explore cultures through their cuisines.
Alongside this, some of our talented linguists stepped up to deliver mini-lessons and presentations. A real highlight was Frieda (5th Form), who prepared and taught a fantastic session for Year 6 pupils on German culture, traditions, and everyday phrases. It was engaging, informative, and brilliantly received – a perfect example of how language learning connects people.
The celebrations were not just about languages, but about building a community where curiosity, respect, and appreciation for cultural diversity are central. Events like this are a reminder that at Oswestry, we don’t just learn about the world from books – we experience it together, in ways that are meaningful and fun.
