Oswestry School has announced a marquee signing with the appointment of Scott Ruscoe as our new Head of Football.

A former professional footballer with an impressive playing career across clubs including Aston Villa, Stoke City, Port Vale, Chester City and Newtown FC, Scott brings not just elite-level playing experience, but a deep understanding of the game from the ground up.

After hanging up his boots, Scott transitioned seamlessly into coaching, earning his UEFA A Licence and Pro Licence Diploma, backed by an MSc in Sports Coaching. He is currently shaping the future of football as an Academy Coach at Wrexham FC.

Director of Sport Sofie Suckley commented on the appointment, “We’re delighted to be welcoming a coach of Scott’s caliber onto our staff as he drives our football programme forward.  He’s not only coached at the highest levels but has also developed young talent through scholarship and academy programs, combining tactical insight with player-centered development.”

With a career that spans across elite coaching, management, and education, Scott’s résumé includes:

  • First Team Manager of Welsh giants TNS (The New Saints);
  • U18 Coach at Port Vale;
  • Head of Academy & Assistant Manager at TNS;
  • Coach Educator with the FAW.

Scott is no stranger to big moments—he’s the record appearance holder at The New Saints in both domestic and European competitions with career highlights including:

  • Playing at Anfield in the Champions League qualifiers, just weeks after Liverpool lifted the trophy;
  • Featuring at the Etihad Stadium in its first-ever competitive match against Manchester City

Commenting on his appointment, Scott said “I am looking forward to taking on the role as Head of Football at Oswestry School. I’m eager to embrace the challenge of leading the program and fostering a culture of teamwork and excellence. This opportunity excites me not only because of my passion for the sport but also for the chance to develop my leadership and coaching skills in a dynamic, supportive environment. I look forward to inspiring the players, building on the school’s proud traditions, and creating a positive impact both on and off the field as we work together towards improvement and success”.

Oswestry School Headmaster Peter Middleton commented, “The appointment of Scott Ruscoe to the role of Head of Football comes at an exciting time for Oswestry School sport.  Combining experience, passion and proven leadership, we’re confident that Scott will take our football programme to the next level, and our pupils will thrive and flourish in this area of school life.  Welcome to the team, Scott!”
