Sixth Form Academic

Our Lower Sixth Chemistry and Biology pupils recently enjoyed an informative visit to the Arthritis Research Centre at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) recently.

The day began with insightful talks from Dr Georgia Lang, a medical clinician specialising in back surgery, and Dr Charlotte Hulme, a research scientist and university lecturer – who also happens to be the mother of twin girls in Year 1 at our Prep School. Both speakers shared fascinating insights into their career journeys, the nature of their current work, and the real-world impact of their research and clinical practice.

Pupils then split into small groups for hands-on tours of the hospital’s cutting-edge research laboratories. These sessions gave them a rare opportunity to observe advanced scientific techniques, including confocal microscopy, tissue culture, histology, and cell analysis.

The visit concluded with presentations from current PhD students, who spoke candidly about their research topics, day-to-day responsibilities, funding structures, and long-term goals.

The staff at RJAH were incredibly welcoming and generous with their time, creating an atmosphere of genuine enthusiasm and engagement. Our thanks go to Laura Haythorn for organising such a valuable and memorable visit.
