5th Form

At the end of June 5th former, Oliver, headed to London for some work experience - within the Houses of Parliament.

During his time in Westminster, he shadowed MPs and Government Ministers and participated in various meetings that covered topics such as constituent communication processing, case management and immigration. He also attended a trade mission event within the Houses of Parliament.

Oliver thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was invited back for a more extended period in the future by government ministers. One minister even offered him a job - which he diplomatically declined for now, as Oliver wants to pursue his A levels and get a law degree!

This unique experience was arranged and made possible by local MP - the right honourable Simon Baynes.

We caught up with Oliver to ask him a little more about his work experience...

- How did you come to gain a work experience place in the Houses of Parliament?

I applied to our local MP, Simon Baynes, whom my father has contact with.  The application process was complicated as the background checks and references needed were extensive.

- Can you describe the kind of duties you were involved in?

My core duties involved shadowing my local MP and learning how his staff support him in his various roles. It surprised me how varied and challenging a Ministers duty can be.

- Is politics a career path that you would like to pursue?

Possibly, after I have studied a law degree.

- Could you see yourself taking on a role in government in the future?

From a legal perspective once I qualify as a lawyer.

- How long have you had an interest in politics?

Many years and I like to always read the news.

- Did you find it a valuable experience?

The experience exceeded my expectations and gave a real insight into the works of a government minister and most importantly, how valuable his support staff are.

- Would you recommend work experience to other pupils?

Without a doubt, it is so important to experience and learn from a real-life working environment, especially one’s which challenges you and encourages you to be better.
