Second Form STEM Day 2025: Prosthetics Arms Race

2nd Form STEM

Our recent Second Form STEM Day focused on understanding the challenges faced by individuals with missing limbs, and engineering solutions. Pupils were tasked with designing, prototyping, and building prosthetic hands capable of completing two functional tasks: lifting and pouring beakers of water and typing their house name on a keyboard. The day was expertly led by our dedicated Lower Sixth STEM Ambassadors, following several weeks of planning and preparation.

A highlight was a visit from Lauren Kay, a professional Prosthetist from Betsi Cadwaladr NHS Trust, who shared valuable insights into her work and brought hands-on examples of real prosthetics. Her talk added real-world context to the challenge and inspired all involved. By the end of the day, each house had produced two working models, with impressive creativity and teamwork on display. After final judging by our guest expert, Burnaby and Donne tied for second place, with Oswald declared the overall winner. Individual credit must go to Angele Guenard, Thomas Lay, Archie Bright and Calum Senior. Thanks to Lauren for making time and generously supporting our students, and to Mrs Keith for her invaluable insight.
