With over 170 boys and girls playing, football is a popular and successful sport at Oswestry School. A total of 22 boys and girls teams ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to play in competitive matches and tournaments, against teams from all over England and Wales.
Oswestry School is now one of The FA’s 100 ‘Girls Football Strategic Partnership Schools’ tasked with developing and improving the provision of girls football and increasing participation within the region. The girls' football programme is led by Miss Alexander (former Wolverhampton Wanderers Ladies player).
Our excellent facilities include (two full-sized grass pitches and training areas) as well as a full-sized all-weather surface. The football programme includes individual and team training sessions, athletic development, performance analysis and psychological support. Players are monitored during the season and first team players in particular are given strict training guidelines, including nutrition and strength and conditioning programmes. All teams are taught various patterns of play which help to embed the confidence to keep possession of the ball and use it to create and exploit overloads, 1v1 situations and crossing/shooting opportunities.
We offer competitive football from Year 5 through to Upper Sixth from September all the way through to April. The 1st XI train three times per week with matches on Wednesdays and/or Saturdays. All other teams train at least twice with an average of one match per week. Pupils compete in an array of competitions and tournaments, interspersed with numerous friendly games. In the 2018/19 season, the 1st XI reached the semi-finals of the County cup and quarter-finals of the ISFA cup losing 3-1 to eventual winners Royal Russel.

Alongside national cup fixtures, Oswestry School also arranges a number of international tours, such as the 2017 and 2018 tours to Las Vegas and California, USA to compete in the LV Mayors Cup and more recently to Holland in 2019.
We are proud that several of our players have received national and international representations in the last three years. In 2019 Jac Herbert was selected for the ISFA U14 team, Cameron Griffith-Norris and Charlie Dixon (ISFA U16) and Ben Clark (ISFA U18). Ben has subsequently gone on to sign a professional contract with ‘The New Saints’ (Welsh Premier League champions). Chun and Yat Wong received international honours for Hong Kong U16 and Fergus Yang at U19 level. Curtis Yue left following A levels in 2018 to sign a professional contract with ‘Eastern Long Lions’ in the Hong Kong premier league. He has also received full international honours for Hong Kong at U19, U21 and senior level.

Through a holistic framework and clear vision and philosophy, football continues to grow and improve here at Oswestry. We are continually aiming to drive standards while simultaneously ensuring that our pupils are having fun in the process too.
