EAL (English as an Additional Language)

EAL lessons take place in lieu of Modern Foreign Languages, where this is appropriate. Classes are between 1 to 13 pupils and take place over 4 hours every two weeks in the EAL classroom.

We prepare pupils in First and Second Form (Year 7 and 8) for the Trinity College London Graded Examinations in Integrated Skills in English (ISE). 

Trinity's Integrated Skills in English (ISE) is a contemporary four skills qualification intended for young people and adults - typically at school, college or university.  ISE assesses students’ ability to interact in English in an authentic and meaningful way through the use of integrated reading and writing tasks and integrated speaking and listening tasks. Preparing for ISE builds real-life English skills and transferable skills required for academic study and employability. 

Oswestry School is a Trinity ISE testing centre and all examinations will be carried out on the school campus.

The ISE examinations contain two exam modules: Reading & Writing and Speaking & Listening. Reading & Writing examination takes 2 hours (all levels) and Speaking & Listening takes 13-25 minutes depending on the level. Trinity ISE examinations will incur a fee depending on the level taken.

There is no extra charge for EAL lessons.

We prepare pupils in Third, Fourth and Fifth Form (Year 9, 10 and 11) for the Trinity College London Graded Examinations in Integrated Skills in English (ISE).

EAL lessons take place in according to need and pupil timetables and take place in the EAL classroom. Typically an A level student will have 2 EAL lessons per week, either 1:1 or in small groups depending on the availability of the pupil/teacher.

A level pupils who are applying to go to university in the UK or other English speaking countries will need to prove their proof of proficiency in the English Language, and the EAL department can prepare pupils for the IELTS test (International English Language Testing System).

Pupils take the IELTS test in Chester. The examination will incur a fee plus the cost of travel to the test centre.
