EAL (English as an Additional Language)

English as an Additional Language (EAL)  helps our overseas pupils to improve their level of English and supports them across all of their school subjects.

International students for whom English is not their first language are tested on arrival. The placement test is CEFR linked and designed specifically to test pupils ability to use English within an English-medium educational context. Those who do not meet the threshold will receive EAL classes to enable them to improve their language skills and be better able to access the curriculum.

The language demands on the pupils not only learning English but learning in English are many and varied and so our EAL programmes focus not only on integrated academic skills, but take a content and language integrated approach to ensure pupils are aware of how language works and is used within different subject areas.

In addition to EAL classes there are clubs which are geared towards EAL pupils and allow them to focus not only on specific subjects but also practice spoken English relating to current events.

We are dedicated to internationalism at Oswestry School and want to do all that we can to ensure that each pupil achieves their full potential both academically and socially during their time at the School. It is our belief that the EAL support offered will maximise their chances of this.
