Samuel Crowned Junior Lawyers Club Debating Champion

Congratulations to Oswestry School Prep pupil Samuel Barr-Ellis, who has been crowned Junior Lawyers Club Debating Champion after winning the organisation's national online debating competition for children aged 9 to 11.

Samuel impressed the judges with his confident public speaking, persuasive arguments and thoughtful responses during a live online debate on the topic of universal healthcare for animals. His outstanding performance earned him the title of JLC Debating Champion.

Organised by The Junior Lawyers Club, the competition encourages young people to develop advocacy, critical thinking and public speaking skills by debating topical issues. Throughout the competition, Samuel demonstrated not only confidence in presenting his ideas, but also the ability to listen carefully, think on his feet and respond thoughtfully to opposing arguments.

Susanne Tayfoor, barrister, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and founder of The Junior Lawyers Club, praised Samuel's performance:

"He did an excellent job of calming himself before he put forward his argument in favour of universal healthcare for animals, taking a deep breath before starting with a strong opening statement: 'Britain is a nation of animal lovers.'"

She also commended his ability to recall earlier points in the debate and build a persuasive counter argument, describing his listening skills, confidence and application of feedback as exceptional.

Congratulating Samuel after the competition, Susanne said:

"Your confidence grew so much throughout the session, Samuel, showing commitment and excellent application of feedback. You are a very deserving winner, and we hope this continues to build your confidence in your skill as a debater."

At Oswestry School, we encourage every pupil to discover and develop their individual strengths, and Samuel's success is a wonderful example of a young person finding his forte. Having attended Junior Lawyers Club for just one term, he has developed a real passion for debating and the law. An avid animal lover with three rescue dogs and horses, Samuel hopes one day to become a lawyer specialising in animal welfare, helping to protect animals through the legal system.

Samuel's impressive performance attracted the attention of BBC Radio Shropshire, where he was interviewed about the competition and his love of debating.
