School pupils took part in Oswestry Town Youth Market

The Oswestry School Community Action group and year 7 Enterprise pupils joined forces earlier this month, to sell a variety of products on stalls at the Oswestry Town Market.

You may remember that earlier in the year, a small group of Oswestry School pupils met with the Oswestry Mayor for the Town Youth Forum. At the meeting, Emily in year 8, suggested that it would be good to give young people a chance to trade on the market.

This led to an invitation for Corrie Davies from the Town Council and David Clough to attend our Spring Enterprise Fair. They were very impressed by the huge range of quality stalls and invited our students to run stalls at the annual town Youth Market, part of 'Love Your Local Market' week.

Lower school students - Charlotte, Izzy, Molly and Lola - made their own products and sold them to raise money for charity. Lola was a hit with local vegan business owners, with Linda Clark, proprietor of the Fat Rabbit on Bailey Street, singing her praises for the beautiful plant-based soaps she sold.

We also had year 12 students - Roman, Elena, Millica and Lazar - who produced a selection of popular Balkan dishes such as Baklava and Borek. Partly to raise money for charity and partly to raise awareness of Balkan cuisine and culture with Oswestrians. A cultural and economic mission!

James from year 10 sold his handmade comics, based on the adventures of 'Gerald the Slime Monster'. These were a huge hit with the public and James was beset with requests for autographed copies of his comics at the end of the day!

The students met the local mayor, the town clerk, and the chief executive of NAMBLA, the national markets association, David Preston, all of whom commend their products and their customer service skills.

Over £200 of profits were donated to charities and students gained a fascinating insight into the running of a market stall, and how some of our best-known high street businesses first started out,  such as Tesco and Marks and Spencer.
