Whole School Celebrates Chinese New Year

This week, pupils in both Prep and Senior school celebrated the lunar Chinese New Year -  2025 is the of the Snake. Children and staff took part in a series of activities to learn more about this auspicious occasion in the Chinese calendar and how and why Chinese New Year is celebrated.

During a week of festivities, pupils competed in an inter-form quiz on China and took part in a lesson on the art of Chinese Calligraphy learning to write the character Fú which means blessings, happiness, good fortune and good luck. They also had a go at writing their names in Chinese characters and sampled some traditional Chinese tea.

‘Cooking around the World Club’ had pupils working together with the school’s Chinese students to make, cook, and enjoy dumplings. The dumpling shape resembles ancient Chinese silver ingots (which are not bars, but boat-shaped, oval, and turned up at the two ends). Legend has it that the more dumplings eaten during the New Year celebrations, the more money can be made in the year!

The Prep School was treated to a wonderful assembly expertly delivered by Senior School pupils Brittany, Giselle, Enoch and Kary. There was lots of of audience participation and storytelling. Craft Club learnt about Chinese New Year and enjoyed making lanterns together and a Chinese inspired menu at lunchtime meant getting to grips with a different type of cutlery.

Wishing you all an auspicious, healthy, and prosperous Chinese New Year 2025!
